WHY would someone do this!!?

WHY in the world do people like to read the last sentence or chapter of books before they read it so that they can find out what happens? Are you THAT anxious to find out what happens? I mean, I am with my books too but part of the ending is the journey that took the character there. Why ruin the whole thing??

Does anyone do this? Or does anyone agree/disagree?

I like to read the last sentence first. Usually the last sentence doesn't give away the whole ending but it sets a mood or idea so that you can predict what you think will happen and it may make you more interested or intrigued with the story.

That explains nothing. i often read the last few lines of the book before completely reading it, but thats not to end the suspense.

Thats just to find how the author has culminated it.

I dont think u can catch the end of all books if u read the last few lines. All storries dont run that straight. Last few lines dont make sense if u have not read the rest of the book. That may create more susoense, but cant end it.

Also, i never jump chapters when redaing a book. i read it in a serial order. If u practically wanna see what i mean, read The god of Small Things. You will not understand the end of the story if u read the ned of the book.

They do this because people read for plot, rather than for the "journey," as you so aptly call it. There's so much more to literature than plot. The imagery, the narrative, character development, use of language, and more all contribute to the value of the book. And, of course, by reading the ending, anticipation is eliminated and therefore much of the joy of reading the book. Would someone listen to the last line of a song or the last notes of a symphony to find out how it ended? I doubt it, but they continue to read the endings of books.

I can't do it...I want to see if I can figure it out on my own. I too believe the journey is oft times more important than the destination, however, I do know people who just 'have' to read the last few pages first. Whether it's impatience or they are worried their favorite character will come to harm..the reasons differ. I can only chuckle and say "To each their own...but if you tell me anything I will stuff the entire book in your mouth...WITHOUT benefit of ketchup!"

It would suck to know the ending when it could be secret. I know....most of the books I read are historical fiction so even if I wish the ending were different I already know how it plays out.....But I wouldn't skip to the end to find out. 1/2 the fun is the last pages.

i heard of this being done; from Boy Meets World. when Cory has a book report due and he didn't read the book. so he was reading it backwards to know what happens before it happens. it was a funny concept, but i wouldn't do it.

I tried doing it once, and I regret it. It really takes the fun out of the book when you go through it knowing what will happen. Especially mystery novels. I will never do it again!!

I agree with you completely! Why would ruin the entire book for yourself? It's the element of surprise, people!

My mom does it! She hates suspense so she reads the end to find out what happens. I don't do it but I can tell you sometimes I'm pretty tempted!

I NEVER do that! Why ruin the ending. And I intend to block any one that tries to give away the Harry Potter ending.
