can my puppy eat a gerbil?
he is a 20 pound labrador retriever/rotteweiler mix, and only 14 weeks old. we think she (the gerbil) might have crawlen through the wire cage, and jackson ate her, but just the other day, he was licking her. does that mean anything?

probably not but I feel sorry for the Gerbil.... I would reconsider getting any other "Pocket pet" .. the gerbil probably moved fast or put up a FUN chase as labs are busy busy dogs plus they will eat the kitchen sink if they think they can.. they have bottomless pitts for stomachs....lol....

My lab killed many a squirrel so anything is possible. But my dog would kill them and play with them; never ate them. It would be odd for a puppy to eat them, unless of course you have starved the animal. If your puppy did kill the gerbil, it was probably an accident during rough play.

If he was licking her they likely bonded and are friends.Gerbils are good hiders and can escape a house. Has Jackson killed and eaten small animals before?

It might not. Your dog might just have wanted her exterior flavor. However, I think you should be careful about that in the future as he gets larger.

It's definitely not impossible, but since he's kind of young he might not have. :-)
