How do I transfer my media library from a laptop w98se to desktop with xp?

Update:

yeah I was really talking about hardware issues. It is an old laptop IBM thinkpad 600 and I tried using a thumbdrive and it did not work. I don't have an external burner or of course I would burn them to disk and transfer to the desktop. I may just have to spend a little money and buy a portable device compatible with the laptop.

Update 2:

just didn't want to spend any money on anything as I no longer use the laptop.

It's not a matter of what operating system you have, it's about what peripherals and what type of laptop you have. Do you have a floppy drive, CD Burner Rom, Zip Drive, etc....? Do you have both computers on a network? Do you have an external harddrive?

I would recommend using a USB flashdrive to store the info and transfer it to the other system. But I guess that depends on how old the laptop is and if you have USB ports... Update and send the specs on both of your computers and we can probably help you out a little more.

You should just put what you want to copy on a CD and then copy the stuff you put on the CD onto the other PC. You could also set up a network if you are going to be transferring items often, but the can be confusing. Windows XP makes networking hard! The CD way is the easiest and fastest.

This is achoumes telling everyone to upgrade to VISTA !!!!

There are many ways to transfer your any type of files.

    1. Laptop to pc connection (using Serial cable, network cable JR45, Wireless, Bluetooth...)

    2. Copy to hardware (CD, DVD, BlueRay, HD and HDD) using internal or external(USB) and rewrite on your XP.

The fastest way is using straight forward network cable (pc to pc), if you have a network connection.

Or use burning to rewritable dvd or cd (you can save money).

Or use USB hardrive (flash or hdd) if you have it.

    Hope a bit help.

if your laptop has a network port then using a network CROSSOVER cable plug one end into your laptop and the other into your pc.

on your pc run the network setup wizard reboot when prompted (this will install the necessary network protocols)

then on xp pc goto my network then network connections the click your network card and go to properties

look for ip4 settings and go to properties

set your ip address to manual and choose 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 click apply and reboot

then get your windows xp disk and put it into your laptop and dont try install windows but just explore the cd until you find a folder called support. go into that and look for a file called netsetup.exe and run it reboot when prompted

then on your laptop goto control panel then network connections the click your network card and go to properties

look for ip4 settings and go to properties

set your ip address to manual and choose 192.168.0.2 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 click apply and reboot

make sure both computers are in the same workgroup (called mshome) xp's default workgroup

your laptop should now be able to see your xp machine and vice versa

on your xp machine create a shared folder (with users can change files checked) so you can copy your files from your laptop to this folder

on your laptop go to network neighbourhood and you should see the xp machine click on it and you'll see the shared folder you created on the xp machine open it and copy and paste all your files here
