WinXP user profiles spontaneously resetting?

This is not for me, but for my mother. She was using her laptop computer this morning (Dell, maybe 2 years old, running WinXP SP1), and it worked just fine. She went to the office and plugged in, and opened up her user profile - and all of her settings had been reset to default. This occured with two other profiles on the machine as well. All of them have the same default settings, all have lost access to user-specific software packages that had previously been installed.

Does this happen often? Is there a solution? What's up with that?

Computers (usually) don't act on their own accord.

Either a hacker got into the computer and reset it or it's a virus or (most likely is a spyware thing of some sort).

Usually I'd say to install the antivirus first but in this occasion it's probarbly Spyware/Malaware so go for the antispyware first.

Below I'll give you links to a free Antivirus, a free antispyware and a free firewall (all three work well).

I suggest you install all three but the antivirus and the firewall are optional (there might already be a firewall on your computer by default).

    ----------------------------------------

    AntiVirus (reccomended):

    Antiviruses delete viruses.

You can get a good working one here:

    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

    ----------------------------------------

    AntiSpyware (most important):

    This delete Spyware.

Spyware is anything like popup windows or a homepage you can't change. Annoying stuff not harful stuff (although once I got so many popups my computer crashed and it never worked properly after that).

There's a really good free one here:

If that doesn't work another one can be found here:

    ----------------------------------------

    Firewall (Optional):

Firewalls block incoming and outgoing connections.

This will stop hackers getting into your computer.

If you really wanted the connections (say it was Internet Explorer) you can click Allow when the warning window appears and from then onwards it will always let that program connect to the internet.

    Here's a good free one:

If that doesn't work try this one:

    http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html

    ----------------------------------------

Update everything you've installed to the newest version and then run a scan of your whole computer.

Whatever you choose install I hope the virus goes away :)!

    Good Luck,

    ~Edo
