As a rule, dot 3 will work fine, unless there is a tag on the fill cap saying otherwise. Be careful adding fluid, though, as if you do a subsequent brake job you may end up spilling it all over the engine compartment when you compress the calipers.

Adding fluid is a quick fix for a leak or worn pads or shoes. If you replace the pads you will not need more fluid.
