Download k-lite codec pack and play in anything.

Windows Media Player and Real Player both play .avi files. But the reason that your .avi files don't play is that your missing the required codecs. My guess that your .avi files are either encoded as DivX or Xvid. Both will have a .avi file extension. You can download DivX codecs from www.divx.com and XviD codecs from www.xvid.com. Of course, there are other websites the offer these codecs as well.

Windows Media Player DOES play AVI files. Try re-installing it or download the new WMP 11 from here...

VLC player or Google search avi codec.
