Does having a full hard drive slow my computor down?

In theory? It seems slower than when I bought it. I know most of the tricks to speed it up but have never really worked this one out properly. I would like to know if clearing out a heap of semi imprtant stuff will get me anywhere.

It will speed up slightly, because the disk heads will not have to move around as much.

Defragging should help as well, definitely recommended after a clean up.

Just keep in mind the following things.

    * Give a mediam size for the windows installation drive while the time of partition.<probabily not more than 6gb for win xp and 15gb for vista.

( i am talking about system with a ram of 1gb. If u havg more than 1 gb ram then give some more space. Because paging or swap file will take a hard disk memory of double the ram.)

    * Install all of your software to some other drive, other than the windows installation drive.

    * There must be at least 1 gb free space available in your windows installation drive. For vista 2.5 gb.

    * Never fill your desktop with unwanted content or bigger files. Move them to some other drive as soon as possible after your use.

    * Type %temp% in the run box and a folder called temp will be opening.. and delete all files inside that.

    * Defragmentation will reduce the file access time, but you can't feel that becoz its some milli seconds. So no need to do that, but nice if you have some time to spend for that.

And always try to install windows in the c drive or d drive becoz if you r going towards the end, drive's performance will be low..

Get a big hard drive like 250 gig or more. You can dump all of your other drive on to it and then delete most of the stuff. This will make it faster. Also clean up the spam and spy-ware you have. You can make it faster by adding memory. I installed 2 gigs of memory and took my computer from 512 MB to 2 gig. I also bought a hard drive with 250 gigs and backed up my computer documents. Then I erased a lot of useless stuff and now its fast. I do anti spy and ad-aware to remove cookies and spy-ware. Try defraging the computer frequently as well and do a disk clean up. Both are available on the accessories system tools.

IF you have data that you do not want to get rid of, install a 2nd hard drive and copy data to the slave. Once you have moved all the less important stuff..pics, videos, etc., then delete on master drive. Uninstall any programs you do not use. Then run defrag...this will take considerable time....you must clear us disc space to run defrag...once defragmented, your drive should operate considerably faster. IF your still too slow, consider adding memory..the easiest way to get a faster computer. memory and drives are cheap at this time. Good luck

Yes because your swap file is being eaten away, greatly affecting your systems performance. It's always a good idea to reload windows at least once every 2 years to reclaim hard drive space.

    Yes, do remove all junk files out and defragment your computer. Also, you should buy a external harddrive and save all your junk on it. You can set your computer to deframent once a month and that will contribute to a faster speed.;

yes having a full hd does slow comp down alot. stuff that is not written into memory is then sent back to hd if the hd is full it slow's down while trying to write the info to what is actualy left. removing unused program's should help some, depending on how much is removed.

yes it would help, but only if you defragment afterwords. run disk clean up (right click on the harddisk in my computer and go to properties) to see how much that will clean it and defrag to see what you can do without losing your own stuff

Yes. You need a certain amount of free space to run each program.

you could try clearing your saved internet files... It may be that you need more ram. but a general clean up should be fine. also check how many programes are running and ending any that you dont need.
