They both seem technically similar. So it will come down to whether or not you want Blu-ray and how much you like Sony's first party stuff.

I've always loved the Playstation, so my gut response would be to get the PS3 - Sony have a solid track record with their consoles, giving them both raw power and good design - the PS3 doesn't just have a fast processor and lots of memory, it has the specially designed Cell processor. With consoles it's not just about raw power, it's about being able to get the best out of what's there by programming. That's why the PS2's games managed to keep up with the Xbox's - despite the fact the PS2 had half the power of the Xbox its specially designed Emotion chip enabled games developers to continue to get better and better graphics out of it.
But when you get a console it's all about the games you're going to play on it, and because the Xbox 360 has had a head start it obviously has more games on it. Games like Halo 3 will be exclusive to the Xbox 360, games like GTAIV will be on both 360 and PS3 - but if you want to play GTAIV you will get it cheaper by buying a 360, and to be honest there probably won't be much difference in the graphics.
Ultimately the better console will be determined by which one has the most, or best, exclusive games. I think the PS3 is still in its infancy and it's a bit early to tell what 'must-have' games it's going to have.

360 is ahead at the moment , but not for long.
I would recommend waiting towards the end of the year,as titles will start to trickle out that will give you a hint about the power under the hood of the Ps3(little big planet,Killzone,ps3 home). But even this isn't the whole story.
The Cell processor is geared up towards distributive computing unlike the 360 ,so there will be applications, and games that will take advantage of other cell processers ,which will be built into other products by sony or online to give the Ps3 a massive boost in power,it won't even matter what chips xbox 3 has inside it (which is coming out in about 3 years time),because when developers start to take advantage of linking up millions of cell processors it's going to be rather impressive.
Saying that, the ps3 is capable of almost double the floating point calculations of a 360 anyway,so it does have more grunt.
The blue ray disc can hold a lot more infomation( about twice the amount at moment, about 4 times the amount within two years probably sooner), GTA developer Rockstar is allready experiancing problems fitting all the content on a 360,give it a couple of years and most developers will have similar problems.
The PS3 is also scalable and will be supported for at least 10 years ,(x box 1 development pretty much stopped when xbox 2 came out).
Xbox makes you pay to play on line - and if you buy the hd dvd add on ,then you are at the ps3 price anyway.
Sony did make a mistake not including rumble in the pad ,but they have kissed and made up with immersion who hold the patent (probably in the dualshock by December)
There are actually quite a few more reasons but i'm very tired and its 1.30 in the morning. so to summerise
There is nothing worth buying a Ps3 for at this exact moment in time, not a game or a blue ray movie, but this will change within 4-6 months. If you cant wait then consider a Nintendo WII , you have to take your hat off to them , the games are just great ,mario galaxy looks sublime (not out yet ,so kinda defeats my argument a bit) but there are enough crackers on this console to keep you going ,until there are big price reductions and you are sure,in your head ,which one you really want, (i think the answer will become pretty clear)
Another idea would be to buy a IN72 projecter (around £450)+ s video adapter and plug a ps2 in ,it brings new life to a game when you are playing on a 100" screen (Resident evil4 -bloody rocks as does GTA ,Black ,burnout) . This projector accepts 1080p video feed so plug in Ps3 or xbox 360 special edition and this will rock, byeeee

It depends on what you want.
The 360 has the best online play at the moment.
The PS3 does have classic titles, though the 360s got just as many titles.
Video game companys are porting more and more games to the 360. It's really just a matter of what games you like. If you LOVE FPS and 3ed person shooters and good online play for them you'll like the 360. (Though the 360 has some killer RPGs etc, and it will have some MMORPGs, even a MMOFPS, but it's mostly FPSs that are the big titles for it) The 360s hardware isn't below the PS3s enough to make the games look all that much worse. And seeing how alot of big PS3 titles are being ported to the 360 those huge titles arn't going to look much better on the PS3 compared to the 360.
The PS3 has those games you loved from the PS2/1. And later on (Year, two, who knows) you will be able to notice the games'll look better than 360 titles, but not by to much, but you will notice it.
The PS3s onlines free, though their likely to charge you for it later on or find some way to get money out of you, trust me on this one.
The PS3s got that motion controller and sooner or later they will bring out rumble controler.
So in the end it's just up to you.
Like Halo? Fable? GTA? FPSs? Get the 360.
Like a more in the middle console with some FPSs, some RPGs, some of everything? Get the PS3, but it's looking to be a more risky console compared to the 360, looking at the sales that is.

The latest news is showing that the warranty has now been extended to 3years for the 360 to cover repairs. I love an extended warranty but not because they are having problems. The Mother boards have been going out and the fans werent powerful enough. Xbox has seemed to resolve the issue with the fans but now your 360 sounds like an aircraft taking off from a runway. If your looking for gameplay go with the 360. Just make sure you buy the warranty. Never was in to the Playstation. The games are not in as far of range from children to adults. They have more games but most are for young chilren. If your going for the adult games, they are about even on how many games are available. Tough call 360 are cheaper.

Xbox 360 is way better then PS3 because xbox 360 have more games. PS3 does not have that much games and why would you want to buy a system that cause 600 dollars and does not have enough games to support it.

for me... I didn't care about the blu-ray... and right now the 360 has better games... and it's like a good 100-200 bucks cheaper, which I used to buy more games...
GTA 4 will be on both and Halo 3 will only be on the 360... and you have gears of war out now... and most of the same other big games...
in a couple of years... the ps3 could be the better console though, if the games can take better advantage of the better processor, but that's not really happening right now

Xbox360, this is an undoubtable hard question to answer, as far as hardware is concerned im sure ps3 would be better, but xbox360 is easily upgraded and software maintanence will be constant even if you cant see it, directx 9.0b and directx 10 will be used for xbox360 games, direct x is cutting edge.playstation is a higher price than xbox 360 for no apparent reason other than a larger harddrive but this is no real reason to cost an extra £300 when a retail price of around 60 gigabytes for a machine would cost maybe 100 at most.

i have a 360 but my friend has a ps3 i say get a 360 because there r more games out but there r supposed to be 380 games out for the ps3 by next spring

if you want a ''gaming console'' (i.e. you just really want to play games on it)...then go for the xbox 360.
the ps3 is a bargain! for all that you get...but problem is most people want a gaming console, and do not use the powerful processor fully...if you do plan to like put windows on the ps3 and things along that line..then go for the ps3...seriously..
xbox 360 online play is MILES ahead too.

well it depends on which games you want to play. If you want resistance, which is really really good, get a ps3.( if you're not on a budget). also, a ps3 can do more stuff like play blue-ray discs. otherwise, the xbox is good at letting you play demos and try things out. I think the ps3 is more worth it if u have the money.
