Help me prove my boyfriend wrong with this problem?

Hi there. My boyfriend was "helping" me study for a long test. We both answered the ff. problem and came up with different answers.

"The record for the Kentucky Derby is held by Secretariat, who ran the 10 furlongs(1/8 of a mile) in 1 minute, 59.4 seconds. Calculate his average speed in km per hour."

I came up with 60.65 km/h and he came up with 4.25 km/h. I am almost sure I am correct but he was insisting that I didn't know what the heck I was doing.

Please let me know the correct answer & solution of this problem is so I can kick him in the bum!! :-)

    10 x .125 mile/119.4 sec x 60 sec/min x 60 min/hr x 1.60935 km/mile

    = 60.65 km/hr

    OR 10 furlongs = 2 km (as 1/8 mile = 200 metres)

    3600 secs (1 hour) divided by 119.4 secs = 30.15

    30.15 x 2 = 60.3

    My km/mile conversion is rough, but you can see which answer is right. It's about 40 miles/hr.

    You can figure out which is correct without doing all the math.

    8 furlongs is a mile. So the horse ran over a mile in 2 minutes. 1.6 km is a mile. So the horse ran over 1.6 km in 2 minutes. So to get from hours to minutes, you know you multiply the km by 60.... which would bring the km's WAY over 4.25.... So your boyfriend is wrong.

    Here's your problem, your boyfriend is right if the race was only 1 eighth of a mile long because then old secratariat

    did about a 16 minute mile P.S. I am old and fat and I waddle faster than that. I believe you meant the race was

    1 and 1/4 miles long in which case your answer is closer to

    the nags top speed.

    10 furlongs = 2.01168 kilometer

    1 minute & 59.4 seconds = 119.4 seconds = 0.033167 hours

    since you know that average speed=total distance/time...

    2.01168 kilometers / 0.033167 hours = 60.6537 km/hr
