I wanted to give our child the best of everything, and that meant giving him his very own Dad everyday of raising him.

(female) When we got married it marked the culmination of a phase of sorting out how serious we were about each other. We had been together 2 years and travelled together for 8 months, met each other's families, lived together and separately, been in different countries to finish our studies-- so we had really tested the situations that could push us apart and felt we were ready for a more official commitment. It wasn't fashionable at the time, especially because if we were going to be together one of us was going to have to sacrifice some on the career front (which turned out to be me, which makes us pretty conventional really) and neither of us wanted to be held responsible for messing up the other's plans. We also had dramatically different families and the idea of a traditional wedding was too stressful and expensive to contemplate, so we had a nice local ceremony, partied with friends and notified the families later. 25 years later everyone has forgiven us and we've had a very good time together with our children. Recently someone asked us if we thought we'd still be together if we hadn't had children and we both said yes. It's been right for us. Of course we're pretty easygoing so chances are if we had taken a different path we'd still be saying it was right. All the best, and don't marry unless you both want to. First rule. All else follows.

I married for love and now I realize you have to have more than that. You have to have things in common. One major reason I went through a divorce is because my ex-husband had different morals than I do. He thinks it is perfectly fine and kind of a game to be with as many women as he can. When I married, I wanted to be with just him for life. You have to make sure you know the person well and that you will not only love each other but that you will be best friends.

I think that the reason for getting married is to share your life with someone who gives you companionship, love and adds to who you alreay are and for you to do the same for them.
