I need help in identifying a problem on my 1993 Dodge Dakota when I'm driving it.?

The problem I'm having is, when I 1st start driving my truck will accelrate normally, BUT its like something is slipping, cause the truck will hesitate a bit, then take off.

Then if I'm at a stop sign I can see my RPM meter on my truck dip way down, to like 200 rpm's and truck acts like it wants to die out, but it doesn't, then when I take off from from stop sign, I get the same problem as described before, the engine will rev up and truck acts like it dont want to move for like 2 or 3 seconds, then its like something catches and truck takes off and actually makes my tires squell a bit.

I have no clue whats causing this. I have checked my transmission fluid and its ok, so I have no clue whats making the truck do this.

It just started doing this about 2 weeks ago and sometimes it worse than other times.

Suggestions...comments...

Thanks.

Update:

Where would this vaccuum hose be located so I can check that, sure hope its not the transmission going out...Thats all I would need...LOL

Update 2:

There is rougly 156,000 miles on the Dakota and has been a little of both highway and city miles.

I had a similar thing a couple of times:

o My oil fill cap was loose on the engine

o A vacumn hose was loose

    Hope this helps.

I am going to say this truck has an automatic transmission. First thing is to remove the transmission fluid pan and replace the filter that is in there. Take the old filter out replace with the new one tighten the bolts back up. fill it to the full line on the dip stick. then run the engine and get it up to operating temperature. Check the tranny fluid again and fill till it's where it needs to be. Take the truck for a ride and monitor response. When done check tranny fluid level again and add if needed. If that dont work it's possible the tranny is starting to slip and would need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Sounds like the transmission is slipping and about to fail.

Sounds like your transmission is shot. Have the trans rebuilt. The smell the noise and the shifting trouble all point to a damaged transmission.

how many mile,s on it?......city or highway mile,s?.......a transmission service & filter change may help......but if you have a lot of mile,s......may need to be rebuilt......not sure but it may be vacuum modulated [ thought they changed this ]....but if it is.....the modulator may be bad....this would account for both the transmission & rpm. problem......don,t think it is though.......check your map sensor for vacuum leak..this is common for your vehicle & would account for the rpm. problem.......good luck!
