Why can't you use dial up on Comcast's phone and TV service?
I have a friend who has phone and tv cable provided by comcast. They are both connected to a modem which provides the phone line connect and cable connect. Now she was trying to get dial up through the phone line connect on the Comcast modem and showed on PC no dial tone.
Can she use dial up on this modem or does she have to use Comcasts services for internet only.
She wants to use a dial up service like AOL, not Comcast's internet services. This is how her comcast modem looks like. http://www.geeksquare.info/media/Moto_SBV5220.jpg

Those are digital services not analog. She can still access AOL with Comcast. Comcast is just the access provider. Have her check out this website for more information on great deals http://www.dsldance.com/

i need to clarify this question alittle bit...
she has comcast VoIP... which means she MUST subscribe to comcast cable modem... cable providers dont allow you to just get phone service and not modem service from them, since the phone device is part of the modem...
you should be able to get dial up to work with the VoIP line, but why would you want to if you have access to a HSI.. why not connect a router to share the connection??
the only reason i can see needing dial up with VoIP is to access a private network, or something like that..
i think the trouble is she is tring to plug her modem into the "line 2" connector on the back of the modem/phone device.. you will only get dial tone out of the line 1 of the modem... check with a telephone to see that the phone service is working and active..
dial up speed will proballay be slower then on a standard phone line.... never heard anyone wanting to use dial up on a VoIP line.. but it is possible.. if Fax over VoIP lines works, then dial up will also work..
you dont need to use dial up for AOL.. you can connect to AOL with your broadband connection..
if you cancel your cable modem service.. you are also canceling your phone service.. as the phone service needs the internet connection to function..
