My wireless reciever is shocking, can anyone help?

I recently went wireless with Sky Broadband (8 meg) and whilst everything was fine when we were wired now we have gone wirless it seems to have, well... fell flat on its face. The wireless adapter for the PC (which is Netgear somethingorother) gets really, really overheated and generally changes from it's top speed of 54 mbps to around 11mbps just randomly, I've tried changing its location, turning it off for long periods, nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any suggestions becuase literallty, anything would be better than what I have at the minute. Thanks in advance :]

Update:

This is the second router I've had, but I've not tried replacing the reciever.. as of yet. I am certain my neighbours aren't stealing my internet as none of them are young enough to know what the internet is.. I had not considered the walls blocking the signal though.

sounds like somtihng happened to your antenna(inside the wifi router/modem)

and it isnt getting good signal strength so its bumping you down to wireless b speeds(11 meg)

depends.. is your wireless router got the latest firmware + your encrypting the signal ? if your not encrypting the signal maybe your neighbours are using ur wireless

as for the netgear, its an 834? better to stand it vertically if its the little white one, the airflow when flat isn't so good.

if its none of them things, you can buy a wireless repeater if the walls are blocking the signal that much

when a pc is connected to a wireless router it constantly negotiates a connection speed. If your signal is weak it will lower the speed. If your router has an external antenna check that it is secure(It may need to be tightened as you may have a lose connection).also check the antenna on your wireless adapter if it has one.
