Having problems with my landlord?
I am behind in the rent. Soon I will get an eviction notice from the landlord. He knows that I don't have enough money to pay the past due rent. I'm not going to give him everything I have and be left with nothing when I am forced to move.
I may be getting ahead of myself. Who can a tenant contact if a landlord is harassing them after they receive an eviction notice?
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make it sound like the harassment was him asking for rent. I meant harassment in other ways.
And Louisville Slugger is always on hand. Lets hope it doesn't get that bad.
Miranda, its my fault I got behind on rent too. Some people don't understand the situation. Forking over a fraction of the money owed and still being evicted isn't helping me.

I have expressed that I am at fault. I fully intend to pay the money owed when I can just for the sake of my credit.

Your local renters Union. im behind on my rent too and know i wont get caught up. its my own fault i got behind. they have been showing the apartment to people with out properly contacting me. no evicton notice YET but according to the lease they have to give me 30 days notice...so as of now i can stay till sept. and keep lookin 4 a new place. But you should get a copy of tenants and landlords rules and regulations. your landlord should actually have one to give you. if not contact your state. good luck!

In some states, one must be so many months behind before a landlord can issue a conviction notice and one must be given a period of time to find a new place before being forced to the street.
You should not be forced to give him everything you own when you will need money to start elsewhere. However, you have accumulated a debt with the landlord, so you should do the responsible thing to pay the back rent with interest over time. This debt will continued to be owed even after you have moved.
You most likely will be taken to court where a judge will look at your current expenses and set up a repayment method based on your incoming versus outgoing expenses where you will be forced to pay so much with interest which will be better for you than having to come up with the entire amount at once.
I do feel for you, because anyone can have bill problems in an poor economy. However, your landlord is not running a business not a charity, so he/she has rights to collect what is owed as well. Not to ever pay would be stealing.
If the person is harressing you sexually call the police. I've heard of attractive tendants getting behind on rent and the landlord saying, "You can take it out in trade." Such comments are a landlords way of informing the tentant that sexual favors will be accepted as payment.
As with any form or credit, you do have privacy rights. I once knew a landlord that would try to shame people that were only one or two days beind by labeling them as deadbeat to their neighbors and coming by the apartment to collect when they had visitors. If your landlord is violating your privacy rights be letting others know about our rent problem call a lawyer.

Lets slow down a little here:
Firstly, if your land lord has not yet given you notice then there are a few things you can do. One is to negotiate a lower rent that you can afford. Getting some money is better than getting none. You will be on much better footing if you show that you are taking care of the premesis. Paying partial rent as you can will show that you are acting in good faith, and will somewhat reduce your chances of being given notice.
Next is to address why you don't have the money to pay the rent. If you are in need of a job, make sure that you are regularly and earnestly looking for one. Take odd jobs if necessary to get the money.
There are a number of legal aid societies around. Also, you can contact your county or state consumer affairs office. They will have information regarding landlord and tennant relationships.

If you owe rent, it's not harrassment for them to try to collect on it. You signed a lease which is a binding legal agreement, they can evict you after giving you 30 days notice to pay. I believe in some states they only have to give 24 hours or 3 days notice. Contact a public attorney, try looking them up in the phonebook. Often lawyers will answer some questions over the phone in hopes of getting more business.

Who can you call? Friends to help you move. If you can't pay your rent, you can't live there.
Did you get a notice to vacate or a court ordered eviction notice?
If it was only a notice to vacate, you will want to move prior to it going to court and becoming an official eviction. That will go on your record and in the future make it hard for you to rent anything decent.
Good luck.
EDIT TO ADD---
In the past I had never had a problem with a landlord...but maybe that's because I kept my place clean and paid my rent on time. Go figure.

You did write that you already received the eviction notice. Well, you can appeal it. The authority that issued the notice is shown on the order. Contact them, if you wish to appeal.
If you are being criminallly harassed contact the police.
Reasonable request for rent payment in full from a deadbeat tenant is not harassment, civil or criminal. It is your responsibility to adhere to your contract and pay your debt.

Weather you are evicted or not you still owe them the unpaid rent, if you do not have the money give him something of like value and tell him , that is all you have. Try to come to some form of compromise on repayment of the money you legally owe him.

For the most part you are stuck. If he is going to evict you then why bother paying him anything? Beat him to the punch and leave in the middle of the night with all your crap. If he is harassing you unnecessarily then call the cops. I have yet to meet a land lord who isn't a total dick.

If your landlord is just asking for payment of past due rent, that is not harassment.

Know your rights and responsibilities...this is info for the state of Wisconsin just to give you and idea. Check your local housing authority. And document the harrassment.
