Why are people putting their QAs in private? What's the problem?

For some odd reason, members do not want anyone to see their questions or answers, which kind of defeats the purpose of a public forum..

I read question/answer about a person who had a bad problem with a stalker, and it made me take a second look at whether I should make my questions/answers private or not. I changed it to private for a day or so, then changed back. The reason I changed back is because I agree with most of what Stephen k posted above. It *partially* defeats the purpose of this forum if everything is private.

I figure there will always be the occasional "wierdo stalker" out there. However, if it gets too bad a person can always quit answering or change their name, appearance and/or account .

I also think some people know others (family & friends) who answer/ask questions and don't want them to know about the personal quesitons they ask and/or answer. For example: A guy might not want his parents to know the intimate details about problems with his girlfriend. (Or that he has the knowledge to answer such a question.)

Well there may be several reasons:

They may be cheaters on Yahoo! Answers. By that I mean they make fake accounts to give themselves best answers, they make the Q&A private so nobody can see the patterns of the same users giving them best answers.

They alos just might be creeped by the fact that people can go through every question they have asked or answered on Yahoo!

Other than that they may just want their privacy.

I just recently set mine to private. I hated to, but there has been an issue with people clicking on profiles and reporting everything someone asked or answered. . .it is silly. But, that is what happens when you hang out in the Relgion/Spirituality section, go figure, lol.

Stalking and voting no best answer on every answer you`ve given. Like a thousand times over. This is when I first started here. Tell me what makes someone want to do that ?

I have it private because I choose not to have a bunch of people with my email address

I'm trying to avoid the potential stalker & total nutcases. I had open E-Mail. I had nuts email me & also hate mail. Sorry it didn't all wash over me so I closed it up.

Just because they answered the questions using bad words or they cheated.

It's a privacy issue.
