What does the phrase, "The hat is wearing me." mean?

I think I understand what it means but I'm not 100% sure. If the hat is wearing me am I complimenting the hat? Or does this mean something completely different?

The expression can be interpreted in two different ways according to the context in which it is said. It can mean that people at large see the job title, the official role or the qualifications held by someone rather than the actual human being. Alternatively it may mean that someone 's role is forced upon them by their job description or their position, not by their personal choice.
