Mesh Motorcycle Jacket?

Hello, last week got a close call and finaly decided that it is time to get a summer jacket for more comfortable riding and protection.

I want to get one with protection on the shoulders, elbows and back but some people with a previous fall experience tell me that the mesh jackets do not provide much protection.

What do you think? I am sure that the protective pads should provide a better protection than just plain skin... in the unfortunate event of a fall.

Which mesh jacket would you recommend? Since I ride my bike every day for commuting I am looking for a good ventilation...

fieldsheer and firstgear make some to notch stuff as well as alpinstars.

I have seen riders that have been down in mesh and it holds up very well

find a shop and try some on

I agree with 51. I have my 1st jacket that is a Fieldshear. I've wrecked twice with it and i would've been much worse for wear if I didn't have it on. I have a leather one i've worn most of the time. (because it looks good and feels, fits better) But it's not as cool in the summer. I removed the liner of my mesh and it's better than the full leather.

The mesh Fieldshear has back, shoulder, elbow and arm pads. Great protection from getting bucked off. I feel much safer in the mesh because of the extra padding. They're also removeable if desired. Cost was around $129 and it has some leather on it as well.

Are you asking about wearing when you're not riding (to look cool), or are you asking about wearing while riding? When riding: Even with a liner, a mesh jacket is designed for warmer weather and will not hold much of your body heat in cooler temps. The liners are generally of thinner material and are better worn on cool spring or fall mornings when you'd wear the jacket without the liner for the hottest part of the day, then reinstall the liner after the sun goes down. When not riding: Wear what you want, when you want, but again, it still won't retain much body heat and you may get chilled before you realize it. If you're going to wear it for just going out, wear a heavy shirt or sweater under it if you're going to be outside for any length of time. The difference between the two answers is because anytime you're on a bike, you've got a 'wind chill' factor going on, even in the summer; you just appreciate the cooling effect of the wind more in the summer! :)

I have a Phoenix mesh jacket from Joe Rocket that I've used for about four years now. It's got great ventilation, padding in the elbows, shoulders and back.

I've got an Icon TI Max mesh jacket. Fortunately, I've don't know how well it "works", but its comfortable, light-weight and has either metal skid plates or thick pads in all the important ares (elbows, shoulders, collar bone, backbone, etc.).

Its pretty well ventilated as well. I live in Texas where the temps get above 100 regularly in the summer, and as long as i'm moving its not hot at all.

Somehow I manage to commute and ride wearing a full cordura jacket. I recommend you do so as well.

Some sweat on your back 10 days out of the year is going to look a lot better than having road rash oozing for weeks and permanent scars.
