Alpha one lower shift cable boot replacment how do i do it?
Ok my 1997 bayliner capri w/350 mercruiser started taking on water last week and i found a spilt shift cable boot on the right side of the drive.
How hard is this to replace i have the parts and seals but i did not buy the cable because it is working fine any ideas on how to do this?
Now i have downloaded instructions off the internet and it still sounds confusing i am a good mechanic but i am worried about reinstalling the cable back though the transom.
Any help would be appirecated

Boy OH Boy,this is not something you really want to get into.I've been doing this type of work for over 35 years and I still hate replacing the bellows on a out drive. Some people will tell you that you can do this without removing the drive but DON'T,try.
Now that I've made your hands shake and knees tremble, let get on with the step by step.
1)place the shift in fwd.
2)remove the out drive
3)disconnect the shift cable at the engine,(note where the connections are)
4)from the outside of the boat at the transom plate, pull the shift cable out. This will be just the inner core
4b)If your going too all this trouble you might as well replace the whole cable, and all the rest of the bellows. But then you will want to take it to a dealer.
5)The inner connection on the shift bellows you will see a gear clamp with a 5/16 nut head, please note where and how it is situated on the transom plate,it has to be replaced exactly the same way.
6)Remove the bellows.
7)now you can reverse the steps with a new bellows.
I can't stress enough that since one bellows has failed you really must replace all three and the cable all at the same time, and since you don't have the rest of the special tools needed, take your boat to a dealer/repair shop and let them deal with the head aches. This will be money well spent.
Good luck

if you are not familiar with taking the lower unit apart i would suggest taking it to someone who is familiar with this. while you are at this use 3m sealant and change your exhaust bellows as well, that will go next. i helped an experience marine mechanic do this job once and we had a difficult job of sealing the ends of the bellows and boot.its not that bad if your familiar.i think shifting lever in forward position and go from there. someone has to hold the lower unit while you reconnect shift cable and with selant on all 4 places of contact, push these four ends together while pushing the lower unit into place .have a pro do the job!!!! listen to singer!!

it's tricky if you do it yourself. you take all the "trimmings" off the shift cable at the engine. straighten it out as well as possible. pull the outdrive, remove the inner cable, then find a thin-wall 9/16 socket and unscrew the brass nut while making sure the outer cable doesn't get kinked or broken inside the hull. it's easier if you have a second person helping.
