Here is a site that will give you the correct dosage http://animalsunlimited.net/meds.htm I would use the pill form. I would only use this until you get your dog into the vet & get a proper diagnosis as to why you feel the dog needs it. Treat the problem!!!

When my lab (now 5) was a puppy, she slept all day and cried all night. She weighed about 12-15 pounds at the time. The vet prescribed 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of benadryl 1 hour before "my" bedtime. Roxie took this every night for about 2 weeks and then finally got on a normal schedule.

I live in a hot climate most of the year round and my dogs get skin irritation when their flea prevention meds are due. I routinely give them Benedryl around that time. I do know how much to give though, from having checked with my Vet and being familiar with using this for dogs. It's not a cure all though. I also have used it as a first step intervention when my dog got a mouth full of fire ants. Then she went to the Vet the next day and got a mega shot of Benedryl plus some Pepcid AC. because she was getting better and then started to swell more and broke out in hives. (Oh, and I did talk to my Vet when this happened including before I had to bring her in.) I've learned a lot about what is safe to use for my dogs and how to use it. Guessing is what is dangerous.

The correct dose is 1 ml for ten pounds of the adult version. The children's version is half the strength of the adult Benadryl so your dog would get two teaspoons. You might want to start with 1 1/2 tsp and see how it goes. I am always worried about over dosing them.

I'd say half of a regular benadryl pill. The vet told me to give my 27 lb beagle a whole benadryl pill (NOT LIQUIGELS!!) when he got stung by a bee.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Since diphenhydramine is used when needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are on a schedule, use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

My dog weighs a little less than yours and we have always given him one full pill wrapped in cheese :)

It's 1 mL per pound, but don't use children's medications on dogs. If you have to use Benedryl (which should ONLY be used to treat allergies, not as a sedative) use the regular adults version. No children's and no 'extra strength' type medications. The ingredients and dosages are not the same and you can make your dog very sick.

You give them a little less than half of what it says to give the youngest and least weighing child.

Source(s): I give my dog Benedryl.

Call your vet. He/She will tell you an appropriate dose.
