Why cant I get Internet explorer to block banners?

I can go into privacy in internet explorer tools and manually put the web address of a pesky banner or popup. But this method seems to fail. And I really don't want to purchase a banner blocker when IE should be doing the job.

Any Suggestions?

PS, I tried the host-file trick and it truly slows down pages opening when surfing.

Update:

ok I should of also said I dont want to use firefox. I have it for extreem emergencies but prefer getting a handle on IE banners. Thats what I want to get help on

My friend, IE is not user friendly.

Please at least try Firefox 2. There are so many great add ons you can try and the options for the user are almost astronomical.

Even though you may have it set to block all in IE, some pop-ups will get by, they have come out with new one's, They are called Pop-Under, they are based on java script.. Just beat em down as you can, don't give up soldier...Good Luck
