The active ingredient is sulphur, which can cause a reaction if your horse is out in the sun quite a bit.

I would discontinue use for now if it were my horse.

    Mane Tail Groom

I have used the Shapley's M-T-G on all 70 horses on my farm right now and many others over the past 16 years whether they were in stalls or pasture or a combination of them. I love the product and have never had a problem with hair falling out. However, it is designed to take care of problem areas, such as dead hair, ringworm, rain rot, etc. So if your horse has a skin condition going on in their mane, then it will cause the hair to come out. It is a very mild product and unless your horse is truly allergic to it (see the testing area information below) then they should not have any problems with it.

The product is basically an oil. My best guess from the smell and texture of it is that it is a fat based product. The product is designed to encourage hair growth through stimulating the hair and skin. It usually grows 1 to 3 inches of main and tail in my horses each month. But, it will leave some residue in their hair that looks much like dandruff because it conditions very very well. It will also make the hair greasy because of its composition.

I never use it more than once a week, unless the horse has a problem (rain rot, missing hair, etc.). If you are using it too much, your horse may be scratching their hair out because of how it feels. I would try the product on a small area on your horse's body to see if that hair comes out as well. If it does not come out, then your horse is not allergic to the product. They very well could be allergic to it, but I am sure that you have had some product run off to where it has gotten on their body coat under the mane or around their tail, and if that hair is also not gone, I do not think that it is an allergy that you are dealing with.

Try using a 1 to 1 mix of apple cider vinegar and water on the tail and mane after washing with an antibacterial/antifungal shampoo (like EQyss Microtek Shampoo) and conditioning with a light conditioner such as Tresemme Balsam Conditioner. Take this mix of vinegar and water and make sure to get it all into the base of the hair on the tail bone and on the crest. You do not have to rinse it out. If you have cuts on your hands use gloves otherwise it will burn you. The reason for using this is that it balances the hair's pH, conditions the hair, and is a great final rinse product. After doing this you can either choose not to do the M-T-G or to use it. Try to get the M-T-G only on the crest or the tail bone, not on the entire thing. If you want a conditioner for the whole thing, use Infusium leave in or use Cowboy Magic Detangler. Those products work really well just depending on what result that you want. Massage whatever you use into the crest and tail bone to make sure that it is getting coverage everywhere pretty evenly.

Also check your horse for ticks. At this time of year, ticks often cause lots of hair to come out. They sometimes are not seen and can cause a little patch with a couple of hairs to come out or a huge area just depending on the horse and the tick. Ticks love going for the mane and tail first. If there are no actual ticks in the mane or tail, look for a yellow crusty material or dried up blood both of which show that a tick has been in that area.

If ticks are the problem, remove the ticks including their head, then wash the area, rinse, and apply the M-T-G if the horse is not allergic to it since it will cause the hair to grow back or use a product like Nu-Stock or Nolvasan. For tick prevention use Equi-Spot. It really does work, but I find that we have to apply it every week for the best results. We once had a horse that came in for a lesson and then was going back home with over 200 ticks in their mane alone. I used the Equi-Spot on them and the horse did not get any more ticks in the 2 weeks that passed before they brought him back for another lesson.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I learned this from 4&5th generation horse trainers.Call your vet. Make sure your horses does not have a fungus, or something else going on. If everything is ok look at what your feeding. You get what you pay for in horse feed. You should never use synthetic anything on your horse. Horses have their own natural oils you can enhance by using castille soap which is lanolin based. Better for the animal. Rinse thoroughly. To condition use a small amount of baby oil, only on the long part of hair. Don't saturate the pores. Also add flax seed to the diet for better sheen through diet. It also enhances condition naturally. Ask your vet.

It keeps there mane and tail detangled and it smells good. Its great for showing. i use it a ton. It made my horse look amazing, and he didnt lose any hair.

It's clear that your horse is having a reaction to it. You should stop using it immediatly. Condition your horses mane and tail with show-sheen or any other type of conditioner and keep it pulled up!

Ive never used it but i reccommend to discontinue using it and call your vet for more info. That sounds like a serious reaction to a ingredient in the mtg. Your vet can run some test and find out which one he is allergic to, then youll know what is safe to buy in the future.
