In Buddhism abortion is considered to be wrong and violating one of the most precious things in this world, life. The Buddhist religion believes all life is sacred and should be treated with care, an unborn baby is seen as being an actual life because it has a consciousness and a spirit from the moment its conceived.

Buddhists have understood that the human begins at the instant of conception, when sperm egg and vijnana or "intermediate being" come together. There is no qualitative difference between an unborn foetus and a born individual. Abortion is thus taking a life - a violation of the first precept.
