Do you think Jason Kendall a good pickup for the Cubs?

I like this deal, you have an experienced catcher with decent offensive prowess, unlike the catchers right now. We didn't give up much an A pitcher, and Bowen who wasn't spectacular either. The rookie catchers are up and coming, but they are not there yet, perhaps Soto in a few years when he can bring the bat at AAA to the MLB.

Update:

haha frank you might be right, that minor leaguer looked decent 1 something ERA but 1 above .500 in wins.

It is good but not for his offense. He only really offers maybe some OBP and some steals,, so he does produce some runs.. Sweet Lou will know how to use his talents.. But his main plus is he really knows how to handle a pitching staff and call a game,, which is very underrated when grading catchers.. Not sure he is great at throwing runners out though..

As far as what they gave up,, anytime Billy Beane comes knocking on your door for some of your minor leaguers i would reconsider and reevaluate them because he ALWAYS finds a diamond in the ruff.. They have an excellent scouting department.. I would bet that one of these guys ends up on there MLB roster in the next two years.

He'll help out the defense, but that's about it. He doesn't hit for power like he used to, and his offensive numbers have fallen way off from years in the past. I think he's gotten too old and washed up. I believe, that instead of picking up a catcher, they should have traded to pick up another pitcher. I mean, how much of a difference is Kendall gonna make if the Cubs are to make a playoff run? They could have helped themselves more by nabbing a pitcher.

Kendall's a solid catcher and going back to the NL might jump start his bat. Ya, he doesn't hit for power but he moves base runners, can steal a base, and get on himself, plus he's one of the best defensive catchers in baseball. The biggest knock is his contract which is paying him way too much for his limited talents. For the Cubs, this was a definite upgrade.

I think these days Kendall may be something of a busted flush hitting wise. That said, he is excellent in the clubhouse and if the Cubs have signed him to be a part-time catcher and mentor to their crew of youngsters at backstop, Hill, Soto and the recently-designated Bowen then they may yet have the last laugh, despite Billy Beane's wonderful record on trades.

confident! he will help lots. you could no longer assume Koy Hill and Rob Bowen (who became moved in this deal) to shore up the C spot. You get a pro veteran catcher, very sturdy defensively, in Kendall. he's likewise shifting back to the NL - his hitting numbers have been great in Pittsburgh, and have been undesirable in Oakland. possibly a pass back to the NL is precisely what he necessary. the sole subject is - Cubs pitchers have had 4 diverse catchers this season now. Kendall desires to stay wholesome to offer consistency along with his pitchers.

I think it might be a good deal if Oakland picked up some of his contract, because that was a ridiculous overpayment by the Pirates. I don't know what they were thinking. The funny thing is that Pittsburgh is still paying a huge portion of his contract, so what we have is the Pittsburgh Pirates paying a catcher to play for another team in their division. That's Pirates baseball right there!

I think this trade was good for the Cubs in the sense that they got a veteran catcher who's good at handling a pitching staff. He is only hitting .226 this year and rarely homers or hits an extra base hits. He's lost most of his speed too, but he knows how to get on base. He's walked more than he's struck out in his career.

Good deal. Allows them to win now. He calls excellent games, is a great defensive plays, and is a professional hitter who knows how to get it done. I see other saying you gave up too much, but even if the other makes the major leagues, sometimes giving up the best talent is what it takes to win now. I look at the Tigers and how they had to give up one of their best young pitchers to get Gary Sheffield. If you stockpile enough talent losing one here or there to get PROVEN players is always a plus.

Well, seeing how good the Cubs are doing right now, I don't know if they need to make any moves at all.
