Las Vegas, contrary to popular belief, is actually not that cheap to live in. Coming from california, it is very cheap - but for even a good one bedroom place it'll easily cost $1200-$1400. With that said, I would suggest most places near the Boulder Highway (eastern Las Vegas) as a good alternative to living very close to the Strip - as then you must deal with the tourist traffic - and is still close to Vegas for a commute to your job. I have also included areas very close to vegas that are more affordable and very nice.
Laughlin and Hendersen, NV are both great places to live if you would like to stay in the vicinity of Vegas. They have nice, new, plush homes - and the traffic is very minimal at times (though accidents can cause some backups, nothing like california though). Plus, they are really close enough to Vegas so you can still have a fun night in the city and eat at nice restaurants. They also have nice schools there if you have kids - but the Vegas area in general (for some reason) has some of the best public schools in the nation (this has been known for sometime now).
Las Vegas is still a hot commodity in terms of living space and home purchase. I would most there if they have more engineering jobs (which is my career). But Laughlin and Henderson have better and newer homes for cheaper and all three cities are less crowded with less traffic. If Vegas is where you want to be, then moving there is the best choice, its not too expensive yet and very exciting to live in (my friend loves it there). But Laughlin and Henderson are great alternatives with less commotion and very nice neighborhoods.
As far as dating and the social scene - Living in Vegas (or near it in Laughlin or Henderson) should land you in an area with a good number of singles (many people are moving to the area all the time) with plenty of things and places for people to meet (all the casino bars, lounges, clubs). They also have communitie organized events for mature adults, and there are golf courses and social gatherings everywhere - though it might take a few weeks to months to find the right one.
Hope this helps - good luck on your new move.

Las Vegas now has one of the highest rates of foreclosures. You may want to look into buying within the next year or two. Las Vegas is much bigger than most people realize, it has 12 or 13 high schools. Like most cities it has its great areas, its good areas, its bad areas, and its very bad areas, you usually get what you pay for. Dating can be tough. Most of the single action is from out of town, even in the outskirts. And what is wrong with a young stud.

You will do fine there. Rents are reasonable, depending on where, schools are good, and there is plenty of work. L.V. is full of single women as is any large city. Be prepared for the heat in the summer!!! Start getting The Las Vegas Review Journal mailed to you, the Thurs. and Sunday additions. You can learn everything you need to know.

The rent varies from relatively cheap to very expensive, depending on what neighborhood you are looking into. Las Vegas is in a pretty good school district and most of its schools are great. And, it's Las Vegas, of course the dating scene is good. It's in the desert though so beware of the heat! Enjoy Las Vegas!

At this point in the housing market game it would be cheaper to buy than to rent. Send me an IM and I can get you preapproved for a home loan and get you in touch with a real estate agent who can find you a great deal on a foreclosure.
As far as dating goes, most of the clubs in the casinos are free to get in, so if you love to dance, that could be a good place to start. At any rate, you will love it here!
Good luck!!!
