Is she unable to eat because she has no appetite or because she vomits or has diarrhea? She should try drinking some nutritional supplements like Boost or Ensure. She needs to stay away from fats as they will lead to loose stools. She needs to see a nutritionist to help her devise a diet that she can tolerate. Have her try oatmeal, usually the body can tolerate that. Vegetables need to be well cooked. Stay away from salads and fruits. Mashed potatoes are also usually well tolerated.

First of all, thank you for caring about the rest of us, I am a smoker and you have added just one more reason to stop-

Also thank you for caring about this friend of yours.

My husband's uncle had colon cancer and his was also removed of a good 40%- he lived many years after and had to watch what and how much he ate-

As with IBS which is what I have, dairy and green veggies may cause problems- the doctor should have given instructions or a diet plan- You may try a forum, yahoo has many groups on topics like this where she can interact with others, or you can if you would like to get ideas from those who are actually going through it.

She is lucky to have you in her life-

    Many hugs
