How long does an law-enforcement officer have to turn in a revoked tag he picked up for a violation?
D.M.V. request each law-enforcement Dept. to turn in all registrations surrended in a period of time. Question is, What is the time?

In Illinois, the plates are inventoried, and sent to the recovered property unit which at that time the DMV/Secretary of State is notified. If the owner clears the revocation, the Officer can have the plates released. Otherwise they are destroyed after one year.

It depends on the individual state. I believe there are a number of states that allow law enforcement to destroy tags taken without turning them in.

Everything we take is turned into evidence. Check with the evidence clerk................or get a new tag and you won't have to worry about it...............
