Do rainbow lories need a cuttle bone?

Update:

These birds do not eat seeds, they are a fruit and nectar eaters, and some insects, kind of like hummingbirds, they have "bristles" on their tongues. They require a special diet, so I wondered if they needed a cuttle bone as well.

Cuttlebone can be offered but does not do anything for the beak. It certainly has no minerals in it, but i think they were refering to the mineral blocks on that one. Mineral blocks are nothing more then flavored plaster aparis, or a peice of dry wall, only it's flavored.

If you offer your bird the correct diet, the bird should not "have" to grind it's beak down in the first place. A high fat diet makes the beak over grow in the first place.

In your case it's a lori, and you should be feeding fruit which is high in vitamin C and D's, which turn into calcium. You certainly can offer the bird the cuttlebone, but i highly doubt it will touch it.

    Good Luck!

Humor4fms is incorrect on a few points- Vitamins C and D do not "turn into" calcium. Rather, they help the birds body to absorb and use calcium.

And, on the contrary, cuttle bone is VERY RICH in minerals! It is made primarily of calcium carbonate, which birds do benefit from. So, yes, your bird might use a cuttlebone, although chances are good that the nectar diet you're giving them is already enriched with the vitamins and minerals they need.

It would be a very good idea. Cuddlebones offer calcium to the bird and help "dull" the beak so it doesn't become overgrown. They come in different flavors and with added minerals too!

All birds benefit from a cuttlebone. It provides minerals your bird needs, as well as keeps their beaks trimmed and sharp.
