How fast were you going last time you crashed your road/mtb bike?

This time it was 34.1 miles an hour.

There was one time when I was going 49 miles an hour and my whole bike started doing this freaky shaky thing, much more than simple vibration going down a hill. It was pure luck that I avoided crashing! I ended up going into this dirt driveway and over a cattle guard.

This time I was speeding up to avoid traffic and my bike started slipping out from under me due to the wet pavement, then overcorrected and boom boom boom ended up on the sidewalk.

Update:

On the 49 miles per hour and the frame shaking like crazy, the very next day my frame broke a chain stay and had to be trashed!

I was going about 25 mph on a straight downhill fireroad. Not sure if I accidentally rode into a rut, or a rock kicked me into it (all happened pretty fast), but back tire slid through a shallow rut and I lost it. I traveled face head first about 20-30 feet across the path. Sore left shoulder, 2 skinned up knees, road rash on my right shin, a large know on my left shin that won't go away and still is a bit sore, 4 stitches above my right elbow, new front shifter/brake lever, new front wheel, trued-up rear wheel (still has a slight wobble), new rear derailleur, and slightly bent fork requiring a JB Weld repair to hold the front wheel in straight.

I was out riding the next weekend against doctor's orders. :)

Didn't have time to look at the bike 'puter, was too busy looking at the tree coming to meet me in the ribcage :-)

Probably about 20 mph. Lucky, just knocked the stuffin' outa me and was able to dust off and go again. Albeit with some sore ribs and a good hitch in my side.

Also, if your bike is in good repair AND it has no discernably loose bearings or poor condition structural parts ... the shake you experienced on the road can often be corrected by squeezing your legs tight to the top tube. This helps interrupt the resonance/vibration of the frame. This typically happens at high speed and feels like a sharp, very rapid 'shimmy' in the front end. I've saved a few wicked endings doing that, THEN worked on balancing or tuning the front wheel. Can be as simple as a bit underinflated tire, a loose or uneven tensioned spoke, or a tire that has moved on the bead and isn't square to the rim. Also even a slightly (barely noticeable) loose headset can cause this as well. Sometimes it is just that the bike will flex anyway and just hits a sweet spot (speed) that sets it off. I have a steel Lemond and it does it at about 45 especially if I unweight the front end too much while getting aero, and at my age, 45 is fast enuf :-)

About 24 mph hit a pothole and broke the ball end of my left shoulder. Had to have a hemiarthroplasty aka half a shoulder replacement. I now have a Surgical Titanium ball end to my left shoulder. Suprisingly bike not damaged in crash.
