Golf Gti gearbox!?

I have a Mk3 Gti. The reverse gear is knocking badly and also popping out of gear! All the forward gears are ok - is it an expensive fix or am i as well to just get a replacement! Where in Ireland (west) does gearbox repair???????

Ebay link below lists (the only) Mk3 gearbox for £245.

Ask around your local garages & VW dealer for gearbox specialists - they very rarely do them in-house. They will point you in the right direction. I had a Ford automatic box I wanted to sell, so I went to them. they wouldn't take it, but told me of an automatic box dude on the same industrial estate, who bought it from me.

Obviously the box will have to come out. The specialist may do an exchange for you (your box out, recon one in - a nice easy quick job) or repair your own which will have your motor out of action for longer.

Now it's time to do your own leg-work. Have fun, hope I've helped :-)

You need an overhaul before the whole thing goes bad. Low fluid more than likely has caused this. new seals bearings synchro's and posibbly a reverse gear set, and 5th gear set and Main and lay shafts.

Won't know till disassembled. Add in a bolt kit for the ring gear mounting to the differential as the rivets have been known to fail! Cheap deal at about 100 USA dollars(bolt kit).

Where in Ireland to get it done, God only knows. Try VW or Transmission specialists. Many times you just trade your gearbox for a rebuilt one. Make sure it is a GTI close ratio box! Anything less is stealing and expensive tranny from you!

this is due to wear but can be fixed the box will have to come of anyway it would be cheaper to fix than replace or you could just hold the gear stick in place whilst you reverse less expensive
