How exactly do you install and run vmware in ubuntu?

This web page gives a very good expanation on how to install vmware on Ubuntu.

Once you have done this you will need to go to the vmware download page and get any of the vertual appliances you want.

Regardless of the linux distribution you choose, it is possible to use it as your primary OS and replace windows. But it really depends if you have any software that only runs on windows since not everything will work using WINE (windows emulator for apps). If you already have windows I'd just recommend a clean install.
