Why do people confuse Punk with fashion?

Back in the day nobody designed punk clothes except

Mc Claren & Westwood... they made clothes for rockers and even that stopped...

punk clothes came out of the necessity to not be part of the mainstream.....you made your own clothes or t shirts and you wore sh*t til it wore out...then you taped it pinned it etc.....

Update:

yo Jim...that "guy" was Malcolm Mc Claren and punk is more than the sex pistols

Update 2:

it wasn't a sex shop... it was called sex and sold leather and rocker stuff

Update 3:

J...punk isn't dead as long as there is a kid somewhere renting a VFW hall to put on a show

Update 4:

sniffin' glue is retarded

Update 5:

foolplat....there is still hip hop under the radar right?...same with punk

Update 6:

homey punk came about as a reaction to the culture of conformity and consumerism...it is meant to be nothing .....

Update 7:

yo jim...a master of none huh.....

Update 8:

lovnrckts...you are so right...psst I love new order...don't tell anyone...lol

Update 9:

of course you agree with jimithy...he produced your band.......

Sorry, punk can also be fashion. I get the point you are trying to make but places like Hot Topic do continue to thrive even with this contradiction.

Jimithy is right, Joey Ramone Lives! As long as punk rock was around there were people making money on the clothing and style. Nothing really wrong with that, even us punk rockers need new shoes and shirt.

It's probably thanks to Malcolm McLaren. He may have thought that he invented the Sex Pistols, but he didn't really have the talent that he thought he did as a manager.

I mean, come on, the Sex Pistols playing San Antonio? Was he high or what? People who claim that McLaren ever had complete control over the Pistols or "invented punk" have bought into his self-glorifying myth.

You're so wrong. Look at your rock and roll history. The Sex Pistols were invented by business man, much like your modern boy bands, this guy owned a sex shop, and sold a lot of clothes and fetish wear. And actually his name was Malcolm McLaren.

Source(s): I've a book or two. I'm very aware of the history of rock, all kinds of rock.

I know punks who taped and pinned thier clothes after destroying them themselves back in the day.

So there were a fair share of posers then.

Everyone is a poser including me.

    Punk is dead.

True it is just another form of dress but punks try to add meaning to it because they cannot add meaning to anything else.

  • 1 decade ago

because it is also a "fashion" dude

as long as there are posers there will be people who make "punk" clothes for those posers
