Wow, the Hawaiian culture has so many great stories of it's own why would you want to adapt something else?
You could do Cinderella and make the Fairy Godmother Pele and in the end, the evil stepmother is sleeping with her feet towards the door and the night marchers come drag her our by her feet :-)
