Why does my pup drag his behind on the floor?

He does this every so often. I thought it might be worms but he has been wormed and is on heartworm preventative. He does not appear to be sick and has a good appetite.

That's called scooting. It usually just means that your dogs anal glands are bothering him. The anal glands are the glands near the anal area that usually express themselves when your dog poops. It's to scent the area to their personal scent. Some dogs just have anal glads that don't do it on their own. Take him to the vet to have them checked out. Your vet will probably express them, which just means he'll kinda squeeze them and get all that fluid out. Warning... it's usually pretty stinky. Your vet might medicate them after expressing them, that's common. You can ask your vet how to express the anal glands yourself, most will have no problem showing you how to do it... but no matter what your vet says- do not express your dog's anal glads a lot... that can cause more problems. Most just say to wait until your dog shows the first signs of excessive licking in that area or starts scooting again.

    Hope that helps!

If he's been treated for worms, then it's because his anal glands are full and need to be expressed {drained}, by a veterinarian. I would not let it go too long at all though, because if you do, they can become very infected and very painful for the dog. It does not take long to do and it is very inexpensive. You can have the vet show you how to do it yourself, because it has to be done a certain way, but most people prefer that the vet does it. It is very smelly and very messy.

Dogs and cats have two sacks just inside their rectum, called anal sacks. Usually, anal sacks drain through normal functions, sometimes it is not sufficient enough so the dog drags his bottom to release the sacks.

Occasionally, it can be an itch or or an irritation from a worm, or eating grass and it hanging out (gross, I know). Typically, it is the anal sacks.

Dogs that are over weight seem to have more problems with their anal sacks. Talk to your vet or groomer about releasing them (some groomers offer this service). And defiantly, discuss this with your vet if it continues, they could be infected etc...

FYI: the smell released from the anal sacks is quite disturbing, you won't forget it. So, try to get your dog outside dragging his behind.

Well if you already ruled out worms the next likely culprit as the 2nd person said is that the anal sacks need to be expressed. Another less likely problem would be spinal problems (tho if this is a doxie, corgi or similar long backed breed this could be an issue)

If it is not worms than it probably is a clogged anal gland! This can be cleaned out by any groomer. Make sure that your groomer does this. Veterinarians do this also, but you then have office visit fees. If that is not it then it could be just an itchy butt. Remember they don't have hands LOL

It can be for a few reasons, in a dog that isn't fixed it could be that he's being frisky. Some times their but just needs to be scratched, like they have an itch. Other times it can be because of a dropping being stuck. Could also be his anal glands are swallon for some reason (normally the dog is feeling uneasy or scared). Last he could be marking his area. As long as he doesn't have worms, the other reasons are normally ok as long has he doesn't do it so much at he bleeds.

Most of the time it is because they have glands in their anus that fill up with fluid. Your next vet appointment they can check the area, and pop them for you. Its quite stinky and you will need to probably give your dog a bath afterwords, but it helps for a little while until they fill up again.

Either he has worms or needs his anal glands expressed. I suggest not doing the annal thing yourself becauase it is nasty just go to a pet groomer and have them give him a bath and ask specifially if they will do it :D

Dogs do this when the anal sacks become full. Its there way of releasing that pressure. You could take him to the vat and the vet will squeeze them out or if you wanted to you could. personally I'd choose the vet.

Worms is the only reason I know of, and I have worked for a vet and rescue dogs all the time. Probabably want to take him to the vet
