Converting to NTFS from FAT32 in Windows 2000?

I want to convert from FAT32 to NTFS on a PC with windows 2000. If I do this, will I lose the data that's on my PC? Never done this on Windows 2K before.

Update:

Just want to make sure you realize that this is Windows 2000, not XP. The first guy who answered gave me a link to something that pertains to XP.

Update 2:

I know how to do it!!!!! I just want to be sure that there will be no data loss.

    STOP ! 'yrcmpyscmptrguy' :

    Don't touch that dial ! ! !

Before you start monkeying-around with the brains of your computer, listen to a bit of advice.

    FAT32 defined :- usually Drive D://

    - it usually only contains (1) Recovery info. and (2) Configuration Settings.

FAT32 takes up very little memory space on your PC !

NTFS defined :- usually Drive C://

    - this where all the 'fun things' are stored on your PC

    - e.g. :- Program Files,] files pertaining to the company that actually built your PC,] files for all your CD-Rom games,] WINDOWS files,] Download files ...

NTFS is huge , about 142 GB,

when compared to FAT32 , about 7 GB.

First of all, I'd say, " YES ", you'll lose a ton of data.

    Secondly, I'd suggest, " DON'T DO IT ! ".

You can run any program you want from your Drive C://

If you'd like to see this info. for yourself, then, do two separate tasks.

    (1) To see the 2 divisions of FAT32 and NTFS, :- go to 'START' > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and, then, click on 'Disk Defragmenter'.

    (2) 'Open' Drive C:// :- check out all the various files, as compared to when you 'Open' Drive D://

I've never before even heard of the function, " CONVERT from FAT32 to NTFS ! "

Get a family member or a friend with you that knows computers before you try messing around all on your own.

You could really make your computer become a useless piece of junk if you don't know what you're doing.

You'd probably be very sorry and very angry with yourself !

    start --> run --> type cmd -->OK

type on the prompt --> convert x: /fs:ntfs

x: is the drive letter of the drive you want to convert, it can be c: or d: or any hard drive that is formatted as fat32

applicable to windows 2000 and XP
