Is Chicago poised to take over the rap/hip hop game?
Think of the foundations of hip hop, New York comes to mind. the "mecca" so to speak of hip hop, alot of the greatest rappers of all time (male and female) hail from New York and then of course the West Coast who some would say gave birth to gangsta rap. and right now the South is enjoying their time on top. the one city I think everyone is sleeping on is Chicago. They have never gotten their just due as a powerhouse in hip hop. Common in my opinion is easily in the top 10 greatest rappers of all time but he is constantly slept on. You look at New York in their prime, The West Coast in their prime, and even the South now in their prime they all have/had alot of depth (in terms of artists), thats one thing I think the Chi lacks, alot of depth. What I would I call the big 3 in chicago common, kanye west, lupe fiasco all drop their albums within the next 4 months, and then of course the speculation of kanye, lupe, and pharell formin a group makes me ask: is Chicago poised to take over?
also alot of credit due to d.o.d., da brat, rhymefest, twista, and shawnna

I agree with you. I'm from Chicago at that, but Common has been around for so long and he has had some of the greatest Cd's. He is definitely underrated. I was even on a site and they put that he was from NY. People either don't know or forget where he is from. Same for Twista, been around for years, in Chi everybody love him, has his own style separate from Common. What I love about the artist out here is that there is not just one kind of style that we have but more of a diverse. Juice is another one. He's been underground for years, but people know him. (He was the one who defeated Eminem in a freestyle battle).
We got Kanye who has taken it to another level. I still think Common is better. But the 2 of them are crazy. Lupe, rhymefest, d.o.d., ace mac and psychodrama, all have their own styles. Shawnna not only rippin it for the ladies but for the city as well. Even Crucial Conflict had their little moment in the 90's of course. I just hope that soon in the future people will recognize Chicago and the hip hop artists. We're next and were gonna take over.lol.
almost forgot my guy qwel. Got some serious lyrical skills!
I love my city and the music.
Thats what sets Chicago aside from others is the diversity. Why set one type of music when you can get several types from 1 city. It's kind of boring to have one type, diversity is the key. We are on a whole another level. We embrace different styles.

Twista is and forever will be the king of Chicago. If the city had a big three it would have to be Twista, Kanye and Lupe.
Bump J is tight too. I like Common too; he's solid.
Obviously I'm from the Chitty and I've always loved Chicago music from psychodrama and crucial conflict and do or die to twista.
However, the one thing Chicago has a lot of is hataz. It's so hard to make it in Chicago because everyone hates on you just to hate on you. It's a trip but thats the way it is.
I think most regions choose either substance, complexity, or club track (in other words lack substance and complexity), or a combination of either of the two. The East Coast=complexity (for the most part) & complexity plus substance; West = substance (Tupac, Game); South = club tracks (for the most part); and my Chicago, well sh**, my Chicago combines the best two: Complexity and substance!

I'm from chicago also. We are behind new york and other cities because we hate on each other to much. If the artist is from the westside of Chicago, the artist from the south side or wild 100s won't support them. Its sad, but its true, yall know it. If we (chicagoans) support each other we can get ahead in this rap bizz, and see more artist come up. Did anybody mention Lupe Fiasco!

Chicago is hella diverse and people are riding off of Kanye's shine at the moment. Not to say that they're just jumpin on the spotlight, but I think that with Kanye being so public and presenting a different type of sound while showcasing other people, the listeners of his music are looking for other people who might have the same style or even musical tastes.
Besides Lupe, Common, and Kanye, Go-Ill has Naledge/Kidz in the Hall, Gemini, Vakill, Add2 and a plethora of others, there is a lot of diversity there in terms of types of sounds offered. I think that Chicago at the moment is a major force. I can only hope that they do bring a refreshing sound to the mainstream and more people can shine.

i was readin an article about common in a magazine at the barbershop earlier today and i was thinkin the exact same thing... Common is one of the best to ever do the d amn thing, and kanye and lupe got potential to hang with em after a lil more experience. the whole CRS group sounds good but pharrell seems misplaced. what i really wanna see is Common, Kanye, Lupe make a group together... *THAT WOULD BE CRAZY!* All 3 of them carry the soul and lyrics required to make TRUE hip hop so to put the three of them together... d amn... that s hit would be alot like connectin Voltron- ya dig!
Source(s): imma add this in... if they did make a group hey would need to go by voltron - 1 decade ago
Thank u! Finaly someone gives common some props. Common for me is one of the greatest hip hop artist. And lupe is a fresh breath of air. Being from the south its sad that neither of them are in rotation on my local radio stations. I'm hoping for some new take over. I'm tired of hearing mims and all these other forgetable artist everytime i turn on the tv and radio

Chicago has a lot of talent. That would be cool if Da Brat came back I hope she does becuase she is one of the best female MC's. Common is the best out of Chicago to me. Kanye & Lupe are cool too.

I agree with you I'm from the "go" and I really feel the we will be on top of the game if we can come up with a completely unheard of new style the talent is already here but ppl keep confusing chicago artist with other cities soon tho it will happen.

I'm gonna have to say nope! Before Chicago takes over, they need a distinct style. NY is excused because they started this rap sh**(sorry, had to use some lyrics), Atlanta has crunk, Miami has bass, Cali has Gangsta & Hyphy, New Orleans has whatever Master P started, etc. Chicago must create its own style or join Detroit, St. Lou, & Cleveland & be Midwest much like everything below Virginia is "the Dirty South"...

hahha like Common says "they ask me where hip hop is going, it's Chicagoin'" hahah. who knows. only time will tell. right now it would be pretty hard to move it out of the South. especially since most intellects will only half listen to good music. Chicago is no joke, they produce REAL hip hop. it would be nice to see hip hop evolve into something new in Chicago. like a breath of fresh air.
