ABC's Set for life?

Flipping through the channels I came upon Set For Life. How do they determine the starting amount for the game?

    This is according to Wikipedia:

    Before the game starts, an unaired "qualifying round" is played to determine the amount of a monthly check (the highest value so far earned is $4,625/month; the maximum possible value has not been stated).
