Closers are a unique breed. They come in late in the game, and try to shut the other team down. They have to be able to handle a lot of stress in a situation, because often, the lead they are protecting is only one run. With a one run lead, theoretically, one pitch could mean a tie game if a home run is hit. Closers have to be accurate as well as they don't want to put guys on base with walks. As far as comparing them to starters, you almost can't because the job of a starter is just so different. However, they are similar to the other relief pitchers in that they usually will only pitch a short time and their primary job is to hold the game's score where it is...don't let the other team score. It's usually expected that a starter will give up one or two runs in a start, and that is usually considered excellent. I love watching closers pitch, they are intense and firey and the crowd usually loves them.

closers are a sham---theres a reason they only pitch one inning--cuz theyre not as good as starters-----some of these closers have huge eras and convert maybe 25 out of 30 saves--think if a starter got shelled in the first inning every 5-6 starts---theyd be out of a job----closers dont pitch as many innings, so the hitters dont see them as much, but almost every closer starts gettting hit around a lot after a couple years, cuz the teams in their division, who face them alot, start picking up on their stuff, and then they lose their job and have to go to a new team in a new division----i guarantee you could take almost every starter in baseball and make them a succesful closer for at least a season---jsut remember, theres a reason they only pitch one inning---cuz there not as good
