Somebody hit my 07 3-week old (only 200 mileage) car park in designated area. Rear bumper damage.?
Case of hit and run at first but eventually found the culprit -- a neighbor's car allegedly driven by a licensed somebody. With police on the scene immediately -- recorded in the report as HIT and RUN. Their insurance estimated the cost of repair to be $375 but my own insurance's estimate is $700 plus 2 days of car rental and some open items. The other party's insurance told me to go to their accredited shop but I am not sure of their workmanship. How should I deal with this? If I go with my insurance to go with the repair at their accredited collision shop, I have to pay first the $500 deductible then may be reimbursed if they can collect the payment from the other company. Is there a good chance that the other insurance won't pay the whole amount and I end up sucking the difference? If possible, I don't want to deal with my neighbor for reimbursement -- i know that it is a headache.
Please help.

The best thing to do is to go through your own insurance, pay the $500 deductible & let your insurance subrogate against the other insurance. The other insurance will pay them 100% including your deductible because their driver was at fault. You should get your deductible back quickly because there is no question of liability. You will not have to pay out of pocket. Insurance companies don't question what other insurance companies pay out when they are subrogated against. If they did the whole process would be a complete mess, so the difference in estimates just becomes a non-issue. Oh, and you are under no obligation to go to a shop the insurance tells you to. You can go to the one you want.

At this point you get estimate in writing from the repair shop you want to take it to. It is the Insurance's responsibility to " Hold you whole" ( legal term ). If you do not feel that their people will do a good job and that you want the work done with a mechanic / body shop that you trust, then it needs to be worked out with the insurance company of the one that damaged your car. They will usually work with you on this and you can give a little on the claim like not taking a rental car and borrow someone's if possible. If the insurance is not tractable, then it makes it difficult. If you have to use your insurance for the accident, then your rates will increase.
Good luck!

The most trouble-free way to deal with this is to go through your own company. You will get your deductible back after the claim is finalized and your insurer has subrogated the other company. Happens every day, no sweat (should take about two months)

The shop should deal with the insurance company, take it to the one you want and give them the insurance info.
