best way to compress an .mpg for web?

    You don't indicate what kind of MPG you want to use.

    MPG 1 and 2 aren't really subject to compression. MPG 4 is the AVI standard, which offers different compression based on codecs used.

    if you mean for video streaming, you can choose between .rm format (RealMedia) , mov (quicktime) and wmf/wmv (Microsoft), but I prefer .mov than the others .

    You can find a lot free movie converter in internet to compress and resize your mpg.
