With a utility spot in the lineup, should I draft a QB or a Defense in the 7th round (RB-RB-QB-RB-WR-WR)?

League rules: 14-man roster: 2-QBs, 3-RBs, 5-REC-WRs/TEs, 2-PKs, 2-DEF/ST

Weekly lineup must include: 1-QB, 2-RB, 3-REC, 1-PK, 1-DEF and 1 utility player (any position on bench)

Scoring -- All TDs are worth 6 points.

Passing -- 3 points for first 150 yards passing; 1 additional point for each additional 50 yards.

Rushing -- RBs, WRs and QBs receive 2 points for 40 yards; 1 additional point for each additional 10 yards.

Receiving -- RBs, WRs and QBs receive 2 points for 30 yards; 1 additional point for each additional 10 yards.

Completions: QB receives 3 bonus points for 25 or more.

Interceptions/Fumbles lost: -1 point each.

Extra points are 1 point; Field goals 49 yards or shorter are 3 points; 1 additional point for each additional yard (e.g. a 52-yard FG is 6 points); 2-point conversions are 2 points.

DEF/ST: Shutouts are 10 points; TDs are 6 points; sacks are 1 point; turnovers are 1 point; safeties are 2 points; blocked Kicks are 1 point.

With the value of QBs in this league (passing TDs = rushing/receiving TDs), you're probably going to want the UTIL spot to go to a quarterback. With that in mind, I probably wouldn't be waiting for the 7th round to pick up your 2nd QB. The depth at WR is much greater. I'd probably draft your first QB in the third round as you have planned, but I wouldn't set that in stone with this scoring system. I could also see grabbing a Brady/Palmer/McNabb in the 2nd round. If you do this, it's likely you'll still be able to pick up a quality back like Edgerrin James or Cedric Benson in the 3rd round. Look at the depth available at RB when you get your 2nd round pick; the difference between Portis or MJD, who will lose significant carries to Betts and starter Fred Taylor, and James/Benson is probably not as large as the difference between Carson Palmer and John Kitna. On the other hand, if you could still get a late-1st round quality back like Maroney or Ronnie Brown, you have to do it.

With your starting QB/RB core set up, I'd take the best available player in round 4. Most likely, this will be a second QB (Kitna/Bulger/Hasselbeck). With the high TD value and low INT penalty in your league, the QB2 should really be your utility guy, and if you can get a good signal caller in the 4th go for it. It would also be reasonable to take the best remaining WR and wait on a QB like Tony Romo or Brett Favre; these are guys that are likely to be high TD/high turnover passers. In your league, that could translate into a lot of fantasy points.

I would wait on your 3rd back; since he'll most likely be relegated to the bench and play only twice (your starters' bye weeks), he's just not worth drafting that early. I know the backs are the bread and butter of a fantasy team, and I often draft too many of them too early. Then I wind up trading one at discounted value for a receiver or a QB inferior to the one I could have drafted when I picked the back. I'd get more starters first. There will be quality backs left a few rounds later. Tatum Bell will still be getting fairly exclusive carries in many teams' bye weeks, and he's been falling very far in drafts; in an autodraft league I'm in that picked last night, he actually went undrafted. Jerious Norwood is also falling late into the draft, but Warrick Dunn's injury risk is so huge right now that it isn't unreasonable to expect him to be getting most of the carries in Atlanta by the 6th or 7th week of the season. Look for one of these guys around round 8 instead of wasting a 4th-round pick on a bench player.

In regards to your question... I generally wouldn't take a defense until around round 13 of a 14-round draft - right before the kicker. If you could get the Bears in the 6th or 7th round, though, and don't see any major steals available at WR, TE, or QB, I'd probably pull the trigger on that. This defense is head and shoulders above the rest. I'd also consider Baltimore in the 8th or 9th round. Otherwise, defenses are too equal and too inconsistent to take while even your bench guys at the skill positions are undrafted.

I'd probably draft RB-RB-QB-WR/QB-WR/QB-WR-WR-RB-WR-WR-DEF-DEF-K-K, with rounds 4 and 5 depending on player availability.

EDIT - Consider that while LT accounted for 25 TDs last year, Manning accounted for 35. Also remember it's unlikely that any back this year will come close to touching LT's numbers. While your two starting RBs need to be solid, QBs put up more total TDs, and TDs account for the majority of fantasy points. You really will get more points out of the UTIL spot with a QB than a RB. If your league is already set up, go to players and sort them by last year's points (the column on the far right). I bet at least 7 or 8 of the top 10 were QBs. Keep that in mind.

First, you need to change your drafting preference. Personally, I would draft RB-RB-WR-RB-WR-QB or RB/WR, for the first 6 rounds. I would draft RB's and WR's first then a QB. Unless it's Peyton Manning or Tom Brady are available during the earlier rounds then that would be an exception. I would pick a stud RB or another WR for your utility spot. I wouldn't play a QB at this spot unless you have a QB that consistently throws for 300 yards and 3-4 TD's then it's a must. Hope this helps.

I think a QB would be the way to go. With 6 points for all touchdowns a QB will be your best option at getting the most points.

The QB is not going to start.

You can find a good D later.

Pick a TE or WR so you can have a more quality starting lineup.
