Dim sum is chinese. Roughly it translates to " order to your hearts content". Dim sum consists of many small dishes (kind of like tapas). Dim sum servers push carts with different types of dishes...and you just pick what you want. Each dish can run from $2 to $7. It's a great way of sampling chinese food. (authentic chinese food)
You'll find many dim sum restaurants in Chinatown (they're usually the BIG restaurants that seats like 500 ppl.)
I'm not sure which one in chinatown is good (haven't been there in awhile). But if you feel like venturing out to Queens..go to Flushing. Here are a few that are pretty good:
1. Ocean Jewels Seafood Rest. on 39th Ave.
2. Gum Fung 39th AVe.
3. Gala Manor 38th ave.

Dim sum (点心) is a Chinese dish of the Southern China origin. Dim sum was originated from Southern China of the Canton/Guangdong region. Dim sum means "touch the heart" in the Cantonese Chinese language, while in Mandarin Chinese dim sum is called "dian xin."
There are numerous of Chinese style small dishes and finger food served as dim sum. Many people like to eat dim sum either as a comfort food or as a breakfast. Dim sum is often being eaten while drinking Chinese teas.

There are many places to have real Dim Sum. Remember Dim Sum just a general description, and there are hundreds if not thousands of varieties. Just like "cake" can be pound cake, chocolate cake, lemon cake, etc. etc. You can find real Dim Sum in most big metro cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, Chicago, even Atlanta. Just looke for the place that have mostly Asian customers, they most likely will have "real" Chinese food. Avoid the one that have the sign "American and Chinese Food", most likely they will be good at neither.

Chinese. And dim sum is eaten before lunch time in many Chinese restaurants. My favorite is Park East on 8th Avenue between 65th and 66th streets in Brooklyn.
