What animal is this?
I just saw it in my back yard; I live in an area around Chicago, Illinois with a lot of trees. It looked sort of like a mix between a beaver and an otter, and I'd say it was maybe two feet long. I'd never seen it before and I was just ondering what it was?

It may have been a woodchuck, also known as a groundhog. Did it look like this? http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/detail.asp?allS...

Well, if it was down here in South, I would say a nutria, but don't think any are up where you are at.
Some have mentioned the woodchuck.
Some other possibilities I guess. Perhaps an "American mink"? They are similar color to beaver, but more otter like in shape.
A "American marten" is another possibility or a "Weasel".
I included some links for you to look at.

Without more information it is hard to say. Only thing that comes to my mind would be a muskrat. They swim like beaver and otter, they have a dark brown waterproof coat, small ears and a rudder- like scaley tail. They inhabit the same areas that beaver and otter do, Illinois being one of them.

Probably a squirell (misspelled).
