My pc will not perform the autmatic scan of files/folders for errors, when requsted.?

Question

I open my computer, open my "C" Drive, open tools and check off, scan for files/folders on the next reboot.  (Scan can only be performed when the "C" drive is not in use).  

When I reboot my pc fails to scan my files and folders and goes to windows is loading your program, welcome and all my programs load.   

I am without the scan of the four stages of my system files and folders.  

Used to work, now for some unknown  reason this request is skipped.   

Please I need an answer as my last two or three question went un-answered.  I even download a program called "checker", and requested a scan of all files and folders.  Nothing,  my programs loaded .

My pc runs perfect and I have no virus and never had one in over ten years..  

Please, any answers on how to correct this software problem.

I'm not an expert but it sounds like you might have some damaged or corrupt system files.  If you have your original install CD you could try running a System File Check. Click start > run > type in "sfc /scannow" > OK (no quotes and notice the space between sfc and /scannow.) If any damaged or missing system files are located, you'll be prompted to insert the install disk. Files will then be repaired or replaced as needed. The scan could take over an hour depending on what it finds.

It's my understanding that CHKDSK (the command line prompt) and Scan Disk (the GUI version from C: > tools > etc.) are the same scans but done from two different locations.  You could try running chkdsk from the command prompt. This article gives some additional information.

And if all else fails, you could try a repair install of your operating system. You won't lose any personal settings or programs except for Windows Updates that came out after your install disk was manufactured (including SP2 if it's not on the install disk.)
