go to wikipedia.org and type in the search line bottled water....it talks about the stringent guidelines for tap water...but not as strict for bottled water and it also states they do not have to check for E coli, girardia etc etc....please read the article and then comment.....I really would like to know what others think about it...I used to be a bottled water junkie while I was out working or traveling.....I want be anymore!!!!
sorry...I WON'T be anymore......
Water bottlers are permitted to sell contaminated water if, and only if, their labeling notes the water contains "excessive bacteria" or "excessive chemical substances". Water bottlers are not required to test for the presence of E. coli, cryptosporidium, giardia, asbestos, or certain organic compounds such as benzenes.
In the United States, tap water is regulated by the stringent United States Environmental Protection Agency. Bottled water is regulated under a similar, but significantly less strict set of regulations from the United States Food and Drug Administration under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act ("FFDCA" or the "Act"), 21 U.S.C. § 301et seq. 1) Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia...I certainly don't!
2) I will still drink it. I've never heard of anyone getting sick from bottled water...but I will certainly be watching for it now!
3) The convenience of getting a bottle of water is hard to pass up! If I am at a park or school event for instance.
4) I worry more about all the plastic going into landfills...If you want to be horrified...google that!
Here is a solution for both the bacteria problem you're concerned about and the landfill problem I am worried about.
I bring our bottles home and refill them with tap water. Refrigerate them. They are easy to grab and go. Won't spill in the car like a glass of tap water, and you will know what's in them! I refill them several times.
Thanks for the interesting question...it really makes people look at bottled water!!

Hey, my dad worked in a water refinery (Note: refinery plant) or desalination plant. He said that the water from the sea was boiled many times with salt being removed as well as many diseases. Then they add minerals which you normally won't get. In this process many scientists are required for qaulity control and it is top qaulity job with high payments. My dad knows as he was one of those scientists.
Wikipedia is often one-sided and unreliable the information is based upon the writer's understanding or point of view on the concept. Moreover, it is listed as a claim. That is what usually happens on wikiepedia. Wikipedia article writers write what they hear and say " it is claimed..." or some other way to hint that the claim is not entirely proven.
Furthermore, it does not have to apply to all bottled water companies. Some major brands such as Crystaline, Nestle etc. are reliable.

You bring up some good questions. I would try to buy bottled water from a reputable company. Also many bottled waters are nothing more than bottled tap water they are not from natural springs or anything so before purchasing it read the label. You are right to be concerned. A woman in my area got extremely ill a few years ago from bottled water that contained E coli. The company was more or less rinsing bottles in dirty water then filling them up from the tap. She was very sick for quite some time. Come to find out this company had received several citations from the local health departments for unsanitary conditions in their plant. So before you buy water check the label and find out who sells that particular brand in your area. I love Figi!

I mean I stay in a city...if it incredibly is no longer the water that'll kill ya its some thing else...yet apparently bottled water is evil with the aid of quantity of plastic waste it creates...for this reason of direction reducing the quantity of drinkable water...its a cruel cruel international.

Just read the label and make sure it says it is filtered. In general it is my opinion that tap water is a great source to help health problems crop up over time. The amounts of bad things allowed by the various gov't agencies that regulate water supply are too high. Over time those trace amounts add up to cause bad things to happen health wise. But be sure to maintain your minerals in your diet because filtered water has had mineral content we need filtered also.

I generally do not drink bottled water. In addition to the unacceptable high cost of bottled water, there is the added issue of the environmental impacts associated with making the bottles (petroleum product) and in disposing of them (too many end up in landfill). This just adds one more reason not to drink bottled water.

Yes, I do because it is a handy thing to do. They say that the water is purified..but what really is purified and do they change their filters often enough. I will now, however, be reading the labels of the bottled water to decide. But, yes, I will have to rethink this whole thing.
