    The first person to swim the English Channel was Matthew Web in 1875, who used breaststroke to cover the 21.26 miles in 21 hours and 45 minutes. The first woman was Gertrude Ederle in 1926, the youngest Marcus Hooper in 1979 (aged 12) and the oldest, just a few days before his 66th birthday, was Ashby Harper in 1983.
