In real life- the reverend, but there wasn't really a doctor to fall in love with either. Christy was very loosely based on her mother's or grandmother's life.

Argh........ I started that book, but it was too boring for me. It was romancy if I remember correctly. That was probably why it didn't grab my attention. But if no one else knows (I always answer, then read the other answers) I could probably find out for you. :)
