How to learn German?

I am planning a trip to Germany in a few months and need to learn the basic language. However, during my search I've found that there are simply too many tools to choose from and I don't have any idea which ones are truly worth the time and money.

If you have personally been in this situation and was able to find a tool (book, CD, online learning website, etc) that made learning the language easy (and as a bonus fun since my kids will need to learn it also), please share the name of the book / CD / online learning system, etc. I would also greatly appreciate it if you would include a statement as to why you felt it was a great learning tool and why you would recommend it over any others.

I am a frugal person and would prefer systems that aren't too costly, but would review any and all recommendations.

Thank you in advance for your response.

I'm currently listening to "Learn German as You Drive." I got it on amazon for about $15. So far, I've been learning some German, but the other way that helps is by practicing with my dad and friend. Make SURE you practice and listen to the CDs with your kids a little each day.

I also bought "The Pocket Guide to German." (I'll find the ISBN in a few minutes.) I bought it used.

This is helpful, and I plan on taking a class sometime in the near future. The only time the introductory class is offered is during the day, which is a problem because I'm student teaching.

    Good luck!

EDIT: The ISBN number is 1-85828-610-7

Listen to the music and learn the words. Try Wir Sind Helden or Rammstein. Here are some places online where you can try their music:

    Rammstein:

    Mutter - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rHX9UvZ__o

    Wir Sind Helden:

    Guten Tag - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPmBjwjVYz0&mode=re...

    Echolot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vvyfkFIqd4

Search for lyrics online and translate them using good translator sites. My favourites are:
