The Ekka's official name is the Royal Queensland Show, but was originally called the Brisbane Exhibition...and was shortened to Ekka.

RNA = Royal National Association
Ekka = The name comes from "The Brisbane Exhibition" which is now known as the Royal Queensland Show.
"Ekka" was coined as a shortened version of Exhibition and the name has stuck.
(I know this from years of attending the Ekka as a child and as an adult.)
For ten days in August every year Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds transforms itself into Queensland’s largest annual event, the ‘Ekka’.

The royal brisbane show. A great day out. I remember going to the EKKA years ago first in 1977, exciting when your a little kid!!! All those show bags...

EKKA doesn't really stand for anything. It's just what the locals shorterned the word Exhibition to.

Definetly not the public holiday - there are sooooo many people. Any early morning is good. It fills up over the day
