Question for Ex Smokers? Would you date a Smoker?

Would you consider dating a person who smoked? Especially if you are an ex smoker? Especially if you have a great chemistry with one another?

I started dating this guy who has quit smoking (I think last year?) and I smoke myself. He obviously knew I was a smoker when he asked me out, however I'm not sure how much it REALLY bothers him. Probably quite a bit huh. Well for about 6 months now I have strongly been preparing myself to quit and recently was perscribed "Chantix" to help me quit smoking.

What I would like to know though is ex smokers feelings on dating one who smokes?

Nope. I can't bring myself to get that close to someone who smokes so we would never have chemistry. Not long after quitting I tried dating someone who did but I nearly vomited when kissing her. It was all I could do to suppress it.

Interesting question - I quit seven years ago, and it was a heck of an ordeal... took a lot of guts on my part, a lot of sacrifice. I was at 2 1/2 packs a day by the time I quit - it took abstaining, therapy with a family counselor and an anti-depressant for almost a year before I was sure I was through it. So, dating a smoker right after that was out of the question. There was no need to subject myself to more challenges. However, if I was in love - truly "in love" - with her, I would probably come up with ways to make it work (smoke outside, chew gum or attempt to keep the breath clean, wash cloths more often, etc.)

I should say that I once dated a hot girl a couple years ago who smoked all the time. Constantly going outside to smoke, having the worst tasting breath I have ever smelled and being generally F-you about her smoking. She was so rude and kissing her was so intolerably disgusting that I was SO relieved when I dumped her. So, I think it's a matter ofhow you handle it and what your boyfriend's tolerance levels are like.

My uncle gave me a smoke when I was 5 or 6 got sick for a few days and that's why I don't like smoking or people who smoke I try, to avoid that.

It's a good way to kill your self slowly.

Me trying to think from an ex smokers point of view from common sense and experience. I would have to say I would feel frustrated that I might be tempted to smoke again and maybe annoyed by the fact that people who stop smoking for a while are sometimes cranky or moody. Though I would be happy if she did try to quit I would support that.

As an ex smoker and married I can only say this. If my wife was to leave me I wouldn't date a smoker becuase I just don't like the smell at all.

I would. I know how strong the addiction is. I can put up with imperfections of another person, as I even though I am an ex-smoker, I am still not perfect. I would not appreciate if that other person would disdain my health and smoke around me, but other than that, I don't see a problem with that.

I quit using Chantix in this past June and blogged about it here: http://onchantix.com/blog/stan and there are other people who blog about their quits, you can find the links here: http://onchantix.com/weblinks

I wish you best of luck with your quit!

I've never smoked, and I don't intend to...

I would not want to kiss or live with an ashtray. I'd prefer someone with healthy lungs. Perhaps I would date someone who had QUIT smoking, but not someone who is still smoking.

    XOXO,
