It is not possible to format your hard drive while Windows is running, and since you do not have a recovery disk, you would not want to do this anyway.

Getting rid of junk involves uninstalling the programs you no longer want (this is done under the Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs) and deleting files that you no longer need.

However, this will not get rid of the viruses, and if you have a bad virus infection, you really need to reinstall Windows XP, and that means you are going to need a Windows XP installation disk. If you bought a computer that did not have this, many manufacturers will sell you one for a fee. It is better to actually have a real Windows XP disk rather than the "system restore" disk, which generally will load your hard drive with a bunch of crap you don't want or need.

Some computers sold without an XP disk have a special "recovery partition" on them. You need to press some sort of key combination to get the process started to restore your computer to its "factory state". You will have to read your manual for this procedure.

The only other option is to buy a WIndows disk, or else just get hold of a free Linux operating system disk and get rid of Windows. This will also solve your problem of getting viruses.

Only if it is partitioned into 2 or more drives and windows xp is on 1 of those drives by itself.

The only way to "get rid of it all" is to wipe your drive and reimage it. If you keep your OS youre gonna keep the virus's too. Worms hide in the operating system. One puter I worked on with XP had worms in hibernation. As soon as i found a worm and got rid of it one came out of hibernation to take its place and it went on and on. Try the trial version of AVG or NOD32 and if you don't have ad-aware get it and run it to get rid of the spyfiles.

If you get lucky and clean it up turn off system restore run the anti-virus scan again then turn your system restore back on. You won't have any restore points but that's what you want because if you did a restore some naughty pest would be waiting there for you because they love lurking around in the system restore folders.

  • you have mentioned in your question that you have viruses on the system. Then there is every chance that not all the viruses would get removed even using the best of removal tools. And if i have guessed right that you are not using any antivirus program or your antivirus programs subscription has expired.

So the best bet would be to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows. And use one of the free antivirus programs that are avialable on the net.

And you can get a copy of windows XP(pirated)

    very cheap in the market......

Or go to one of the computer retail store and ask for the windows copy.............

Before you play with it, back up your drive to disk. Get a free program like " spybot" from Microsoft, it's good for detecting bad stuff.
